Singer, songwriter, guitarist, and banjo player Miwa Gemini demonstrates her versatile and creative imagination on her latest release Will I Fly. Her recordings of acoustic pop mingled with roots rock and porch folk splendor are always a pleasurable experience, and Will I Fly does nothing less than make listening to her music a delightful experience.

The bouncy polka style rhythm of the title track launches the recording into a sprightly mood that triggers an infectious Eastern European swing energy. Diversifying her repertoire, the thumbing beats of "Hattie's Love Song" produce a seesaw sway as Miwa's shimmering vocals move sensually across the silhouettes of vibraphone chimes. A country twange accents the melody as the porch folk treads of the guitar hook effectively stick in the listener's mind.

The enchanting lullaby of "Japanese Song" is set to a carousal ride meter as Miwa sings the verses in Japanese and the chorus in English.  "On The Road" brings out Miwa's gypsy folk quality aroused by the exotic frills of the horn, evoking a swirling motion through the instrumentation. Miwa's breezy vocal swells along "Hard Time" ignite a sonic pop smoothness, which shifts to a haunting tone through "Miss Scarlet and Zoe," as the eerie accordion sensations are trelissed by Miwa's reverberating vocals while the soaring horn moans induce a mourning atmosphere.

The mesmerizing singalong verses of "Butterfly" are followed by the bobbling undulations of "Marching," which transition into the lulling quivers of "Sleepless Night." Miwa's storytelling narrations swathe the tracks in a soothing cadence incomparable to any other vocalist. The roots rock tremors of "Jockey Full of Bourbon" imbue a festive chanty persuasion into the melody, infusing an Eastern European flange in the chord progressions.

The sunrise hue accentuating the balmy flutters of the ballad "Paris" introduce audiences to Miwa's deeper vocal timbres as the verdant meadow of uplifting harmonic forms massage the listener's senses. The recording closes with the dual rhythm of "Little Monkey," oscillating between a cha-cha tempo spurred by the bubbly horn rotations and a sleek torch song kindle.

Fun, imaginative and haunting, Will I Fly takes audiences along a pleasurable jaunt. Filled with emotive vocal expressions and soothing melodic arrangements, Miwa Gemini remains true to her nature, indulging in creative urges while keeping moored to the earthy tones of folk and roots rock,
