Recalling the Big Band era of the later half of the 1930's, bandleader-tenor saxophonist-pianist Loren Schoenberg and his 15-piece Jazz Orchestra recapture the melodic luster, harmonic elegance, and radiant opulence of speakeasy, Post-World War I, Post-Prohibition Age, Café Society jazz on their compilation So Many Memories.  Having served for 40 years overseeing the Benny Goodman Archives at Yale University and a longtime Juilliard jazz history professor, Schoenberg mints a selection of nostalgic tunes from yesteryear, encouraging listeners to delve into America's memory bank.  The 16-track collection features previously unheard arrangements penned from 1936-39 by swing era composer/arranger Eddie Sauter, and created for bandleader and early jazz vibraphonist Red Norvo and his wife, singer Mildred Bailey.  The pair had been dubbed “Mr. and Mrs. Swing."  Participants on the recording include vocalist Kate Kortum and vibraphonist Warren Wolf, whose performance on the title track, a tune first performed by Benny Goodman and his orchestra with singer Martha Tilton in 1937, is mesmerizing, silky smooth and softly silhouetted in dreamy embers.  The music is conducive to couples dancing cheek to cheek, gazing lovingly at each other.  Schoenberg's reworking of Sauter's arrangements propagate a romantic lure that permeate a modern day youthfulness.  Recorded in a Juilliard band rehearsal room, the orchestra is mostly comprised of the school's students, whose instinct for swing is sonically picturesque and aesthetically transcending.  What sets Schoenberg's orchestra apart from other university jazz bands is their affinity for classic dreamy swing, following in the footsteps of the pioneers of this breed and performing it with youthful glee.
