Shout Section Big Band (SSBB) is an 18-piece ensemble dedicated to big band swing, Great American Songbook classics, and pop songs from multiple decades, performing for audiences in the Chicago area and throughout the Midwest. Tatum's Swingin's Session!!! is the band’s fifth album, a 14-song assortment showcasing vocalist Tatum Langley, a Chicago-based singer and band member for several years. The repertoire encompasses classic favorites by such luminaries as Cole Porter, Cy Coleman, The Carpenters, and The Beatles. Joining Langley is the band's founder and conductor Brett Dean on trumpet, Ben Crino on guitar, and Nick Roach on trombone, along with trumpeters Andrew Egizio, Will Schmalbeck, and John Dorhauer, and saxophonists Ted Holtz, Bill Rank, Andy Schlinder, Michael Kennedy, and Jimmy Farace. Jumping off with "Deedle Blues," a signature tune for Diane Schuur, the band plunges deep into the classic festive swing framework as Langley displays her scat artistry, maintaining the uplifting vibe with Cole Porter's "Ridin' High" and the flashy gem “All the Cats Join In," scrolled by Ray Gilbert, Eddie Sauter, and Alec Wilder. Veering off the jazz standard course, the band plays Dorhauer's astutely arranged mash-up "Sing," rigging Dresden Dolls's haunting tune "Sing" with The Carpenters's cheerful sing-along number "Sing," both sewn seamlessly by Langley's caressing vocals. Her sassy rendition of the Beatles pop melody "A Hard Day's Night" is a playful romp filament by blazing horns and pumping beats. Kindling a marching band cadence along Cy Coleman's catchy "Pass Me By," Langley sparkles with fun vocal phrasing and flirty hooks, switching to a traditional scat vigor along Irving Berlin's vintage jewel “The Song Is Ended.” Langley and the Shout Section Big Band canvass a wide breadth of the swing jazz spectrum, doing so with vigor, zeal, affection for the art form.
