Album Review: Dream With Me from Naama Gheber

Image
Album:  Dream With Me Artist:  Naama Gheber Label:  La Reserve Records Website:  https://www.naamasings.com/ Endowed with a vocal depth reminiscent of CeCe Gable enhanced by a smooth vocalese reflective of Donna Singer topped in a sprightly youthfulness recalling of Fleur Seule, vocalist Naama Gheber's talent is vast and multi-layered.  She demonstrates an unwavering command of nuancing her phrasing with impromptu punctuation and interpolating poignant inflections, spiking the tracks on her latest recording Dream With Me with a liveliness that compels the listener's attention and holds each one spellbound. From the rhapsodic scatting she unleashes across "Weaver of Dreams" to the dulcet vocal swells wistfully ruminating through "Street of Dreams," Gheber keeps her audience enthralled.  Her focus to detail and staying true to the traditional swing ethos is applaudable.  Her talent to hold the listener magnetized makes her an alluring songstress, as her ...

Album Review: I Thought About You from Jan Cronin

Image
Album:  I Thought About You Artist:  Jan Cronin Label:  Scootermusic Website:  https://jancronin.com Sonically exquisite, singer-songwriter Jan Cronin delivers a panoply of dreamy melodies on her recording I Thought About You from Scootermusic.  Accompanied simply by guitarist Andy Reiss and bassist Jim Ferguson, Cronin hypnotizes the listener with a stream of sparsely layered melodies that showcase the warmth of her resonance and the clarion smoothness of her timbres.  The emotional depth in her delivery penetrates audiences, drawing attention to the lyrics and their meaning. Her rendition of Victor Young and Ned Washington's classic gem "My Foolish Heart" speaks of human sentiment as she muses, "The night like a lovely tune / beware my foolish heart / how white the ever crescent moon / take care my foolish heart / there's a line between love and fascination / that's hard to see."  Ferguson's bass pumps plume like a field of delicate pansies that c...

Album Review: New Sounds from the Jazz Age from LIzzie Thomas

Image
Album:  New Sounds from the Jazz Age Artist:  Lizzie Thomas Label:  LIzzie Thomas Music Website:  www.lizziethomas.net Jazz chanteuse Lizzie Thomas releases her fourth album, New Sounds from the Jazz Age , offering aurally gorgeous interpretations of nine classic standards from the Great American Songbook. Endowed with a soothing register reminiscent of her predecessors of the Jazz Age/Prohibition Era, Thomas renews the silky vibrations heralded from generation to generation, becoming a part of the collective consciousness.  Thomas' latest recording adds her voice to the global collective of gorgeous voices. The bossa nova sway of "In The Still of the Night" cradles the caressing vibrations of Thomas' vocals, ladling the melody with seductive undulations.  The fluidity of the track is graced by her warm vocal tones.  Quite a bit more jaunty, Thomas handles "One Note Samba" with the rapid gusto of a typewriter moving at 100 words per minute speed....

Album Review: Can't Get Out of this Mood from Beverley Church Hogan

Image
Album:  Can't Get Out of this Mood Artist:  Beverley Church Hogan Label:  Cafe Pacific Website:  http://www.beverleyhogan.com/ Torchlight vocalist Beverley Church Hogan intimates human vulnerabilities, temporal desires, and lingering reflections about life on her debut recording Can't Get Out of this Mood .  Projecting a dimly lit atmosphere in the sparse throbs of Lyman Medeiros' bass, the strolling gait of John Proulx's piano keys, the gentle strums of Graham Dechter's guitar, and the lightly brushed strokes of Clayton Cameron's drumming, Hogan creates a cozy setting for her audiences as though she is tapping into their thoughts and emotions on a personal and private wavelength. She ruminates in the title track, "Can't get out of this mood / Last night your lips were appealing / The thrill should have been all gone by today / And the usual way / But it's only your arms I'm out of / Can't get out of this dream / Oh, w...
