Album Review: We've Only Just Begun from Ashley Pezzotti

Album:  We've Only Just Begun
Artist:  Ashley Pezzotti
Label:  Self-Released

From the start, the listener is enthralled by the way cabaret singer Ashley Pezzotti turns a phrase, injects playful inflections in the lyrics, and evokes emotion in her vocal delivery.  She personalizes every track, developing an intimacy between her and her audience.  Her first straight-ahead jazz endeavor We've Only Just Begun contains an assortment of original compositions inspired by the Great American Songbook.  The stories told in the lyrics are drawn from her own personal experiences and from people that have touched her.

Incorporating elements of swing, scat, blues, jazz, and bop, Pezzotti is a modern day Ella Fitzgerald with a touch of Billie Holiday's knack for stirring up the audience's emotions.  Her scatting along the rhythmic grooves of "Jackie" summons an upbeat twang in her vocals that's infectious.  She shuffles with a vigorous gait across "Only Takes a Moment," keeping up with the bopping pace of bassist Bob Bruya and drummer Kyle Poole.  The title track is a silky swinging jazz number that brings out the sultry voicing in Pezzotti's register, which returns in the candlelight embers of "That Way," eliciting a fun-loving attitude in the vane of the Great American Songbook.

"I Hope You Find Her" brings out the torchlight luster of Pezzotti's vocals as she sings over the delicate trickles of Emmet Cohen's piano keys, acting like a soothing balm on the listener's senses.  The noir-like ambience of "Nothing Good Happens After Midnight" features the smooth twinkles of tenor saxophonist Alex Weitz followed by the glistening flickers of Cohen's keys, each improvising majestic riffs into the melody.  "September in the Rain" adheres to the idioms of straight-ahead jazz, alight with Bruya's toe-tapping beats on the bass and garnished in sparkling notes administered by Cohen's keys, Weitz's sweet-sounding saxophone toots, and Poole's cymbal strikes.

Born in Queens, New York, Ashley Pezzotti found her choice of music performance welcoming, having been a breeding ground for cabaret and swing since the 20th century.  At 16 years old, Ashley performed on national television with country star Keith Urban at the legendary American Country Awards for a viewing audience of over 5 million people.  Her other cameos include duets with Grammy award winning artist Dave Holland, and Internationally renowned performers Jon Secada, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Arturo Sandoval.  In 2018, Pezzotti completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music with a full tuition scholarship.
