Vocalist Mark Winkler sings the music of singer-songwriter Bobby Troup on his newest release I'm with You from Café Pacific Records.  American gems like the iconic "Route 66" and the perky romper "Triskaidekaphobia" are reawakened in Winkler's hands as he revamps the swing music of the 1940's and '50s.  From the romantic ambience of "It Happened Once Before" to the lightning-sharp filament powering the title track, Winkler takes the music traditionally played in the lounge rooms of the Las Vegas casinos out in the open.

The bend of a lyrical phrase, the extension of a syllable, and the rhythmic fingersnapping timing of a verse are each considered in Winkler's delivery as he moves through Troup's repertoire with complete aplomb.  He refers to Troup as a kindred spirit of his and demonstrates what he means by that in his rendering.  The whimsical flare in his phrasing of the lyrics in "Triskaidekaphobia" brings out his playful character without sacrificing the jazz style sophistication of his vocal stance and elegance of the music.

The springy swirls of Jamieson Trotter's Hammond B3 organ in the title track alternate with Grant Geissman's bluesy guitar riffs, underpinned by a brisk bobbing in the rhythmic pattern. The lulling swells of "It Happened Once Before" are moored to a luxuriating soliloquy played on the piano.  Winkler has fun moving to the jiving grooves of "Three Bears" then slows the tempo to a trundle in the reflective tune "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring."

Co-produced by Winkler with longtime musical collaborator Dolores Scozzesi and engineered and mixed by Nolan Shaheed, the recording sizzles, shimmers, and soothes.  An exercise in playing modern swing, the recording is a tribute to the music of Bobby Troup and a showcase for Winkler's adaptability to perform another artist's repertoire.
