Danish vocalist Sinne Eeg teams with up pianist Jacob Christoffersen on her 2025 offering Shikiori. Setting the stage, Shikiori is the name of the 150-year-old traditional Japanese home-turned-concert venue where she and Christoffersen recorded the live album. The set comprises of a mix of originals by Eeg and Christoffersen beside personalized interpretations of songs by Billy Strayhorn, Leonard Bernstein, and Annie Lennox. The music is stirring, manteled by the bluesy soulful intonations of Eeg's register, resonating an entrancing lilt liken to Sade and an impaling quality reflective of Adele. Encircled in a breezy ether, Christoffersen's pulsating playing pervades a poetic canter alongside Eeg's ruminating vocals.
“Don’t Be So Blue," composed by Eeg is a luxuriating and spacious ballad that highlights her luminous tone and penetrative vocalese, conveying an equally serene atmosphere through "Soba Flower," an original number by Christoffersen with lyrics in Japanese written by singer/songwriter Remi. Projecting a bluesy spiritual climate, Eeg's vocals take take flight on Lennox's melody "Cold," entering into western soul terrain, then flexes the mellifluous and symphonic tones of her voicing on Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's work "Maria." Switching to a traditional swinging resonance decked in scat verses along "But Not For Me," Eeg intimates a private conversation with the audience supplemented by vocal improvisations that are playful and animated. Whether the duo are performing jazz standards, spirituals, adult pop, or torchlight ballads, her vocal control and enunciation pervades a clarion ring and Christoffersen's playing projects a clandestine atmosphere. The duo's performance is stirring and aurally euphoric.
