Baritone saxophonist and Chicago native Dave Schumacher leads his jazz ensemble Cubeye along a whirlwind ride on Aqua Con Gas.  A mix of Schumacher's originals sprinkled with jazz standards, Schumacher entwines Latin jazz with swing, bop, and improvisation.  Their tailored creations are finely detailed and seamlessly threaded.  Schumacher's original tune "Al Rosé" is harnessed in a bopping strut as he performs a series of dynamic acrobatics on the sax while Alex Norris carves out a path of spiraling toots on the trumpet.  Their embellishments on B. Reid's softly ambient "The Gypsy" demonstrates Schumacher's nimble playing, threading sprightly curlicues along Silvano Monasterios's lightly stroking keys, followed by the billowy ruffles of Jesus Ricardo's trumpet.  "Amosaya,"composed and arranged by Schumacher, partners swing with a festive Cuban rhythm swath in the shimmering tone of Schumacher's sax.  "Letters from Paris" is an alluring ballad composed by Monasterios and wraps the listener in cozy ruminations that put the listener in a state of bliss.  "Cubism" features the blazing furls of baritone saxophonist Roger Rosenberg while a chic salsa gyration lights up "Prince of Darkness," a composition by Wayne Shorter, fired up by Schumacher's dexterous playing and the spicy percussive accents of Yusnier Sanchez's congas.  The listener steps into a party through these tracks, a whirlwind ride that coalesces Latin elements with jazz axioms.
